Cherry Leaves

A pair of modelled short socks featuring a lace leaf column running up the outside of the foot, knit in green yarn.I have loved this lace pattern for a long time. The original is in the book with the two sets of leaves facing each other across a central spine. As well as being pretty wide, the stitch count of the pattern varies over the pattern repeat. This makes it hard to use in your average shawl or other accessory pattern, but when I was flipping through my books looking for ideas for socks I knew it was going to be perfect!

I decided to split the pattern in half and use one half on each foot, which worked out really well. I tried a couple of ways to keep the stitch count the same over the pattern, but ultimately decided that it looked better the original way.

I looked through a load of leaves to find some the same shape as these lace leaves and landed on the wild cherry tree. I love cherry tress and we have one outside our bedroom window which I love to see changing over the seasons, so I’ve named the pattern Gean which is the Scot’s name for the wild cherry tree!

Lace Twill

I have been looking forward so much to knitting more shortie socks – they’re all the fun parts of knitting socks (toes and heels) with none of the boring bits (the leg!) I knew I wanted something lacy because we’re thinking summery and I added the rib to give the edges a little more stability.

Lush Leaves
