I love knitting brioche. Once you get into the rhythm it’s a really relaxing process! I know the idea of knitting brioche can seem intimidating but the process is really simple, especially in this pattern. There’s only one colour, no brioche increases or decreases. It’s just a yarn over, slipped stitch and a knit stitch. If you find the idea of brioche intimidating, then this is your perfect first step – plus the pattern includes a photo tutorial!
The inspiration for Windlestrae came from Roille. The brioche patterns are the same but Roille is 4 ply and a cowlette, while Windlestrae is a DK shawl with three sizes. But I made another significant change. Roille has a gorgeous little slipped stitch dividing line, which is great on the cowlette but I worried that on a larger shawl it might become tight and prevent the shawl from blocking the way I wanted, so I had to change it.
After several different ideas, I came up with this gorgeous embroidery pattern! It’s gorgeous and super simple to do. All the stitching happens on the right side of the shawl so you don’t need to turn back and forth for either side and there’s a photo tutorial to guide you through the stitches!
You can get 25% off Windlestrae with the code RyegrassSale until 11.59 pm (BST) on the 14th of October 2025. The pattern is also on LoveCrafts and Etsy!
